 | | Once you have accomplished the preliminary work of engaging others and designing your local experiment, the challenge is to choose the best methods for taking your communitys new knowledge to practice. While it is not possible to present every choice of method here, those available in the Experiment Space all meet certain specifications. They are highly inclusive, participative and democratic, and used to address problems and concerns that are important to those conducting the research. The processes they use seek to view real-world situations from multiple perspectives, to generate novel solutions that would not be available without group inquiry, and to bring about changes that those in the situation see as improvements. Experts who participate are viewed as facilitators and resource people who support the groups ability to carry out their research and create desired changes in their situation. These approaches are powerful methods of social and civic engagement, as they often lead to new collaborative relationships, increased trust and open communication, and an action learning orientation on the part of participants. Reflections 1. What criteria will help you decide on the best method/s to use in your local project? 2. What method/s seem to be most appropriate, given your criteria and your projects vision, purpose, and functions? 3. What preparation needs to be done to use the selected method/s? Actions Review the information at Community-Based Inquiry Methods, preferably with most or all of the colleagues engaged in your local experiment. Then, in conversation, establish criteria for selecting the most appropriate method/s, and use these criteria to choose the method/s you will use. If none of those offered fit what you are trying to accomplish, consider adapting those offered, or do your own search for other methods. Dont forget to turn to your original community of practice members as you make this important decision and begin your experiment. Tools and Resources Community-Based Inquiry Methods | |
