 | | Guiding principles express your communitys philosophy, values, beliefs, and assumptions in statements that will help you and others understand your larger view of the world and how it works. Principles express the "why" behind the theory and practices that you are proposing for your field of inquiry. One example of guiding principles is the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, which states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal..." People from other cultures may recognize guiding principles from their own founding documents or creation myths. Others will recognize these in the belief statements created by their organizations or institutions. These statements are intended to guide those who live or work within a particular environment or context. In your communitys system of knowledge, your guiding principles will serve the same purpose. Based on your way of seeing your environment or context your guiding principles will act as signposts in shaping the behavior of those who take your new knowledge to practice. Reflections 1. What values, beliefs, and assumptions, underlay the knowledge system you are creating? 2. What views about the environment or context need to be explicitly expressed to yourselves and others? 3. What actions or behaviors of those who will use your new knowledge are most in need of guidance? 4. What principles would you suggest that your community members and others adopt and use in applying your new knowledge in their own environments or contexts? Actions As individuals, spend some time reflecting on the questions offered here. Then, in conversation, share your reflections with the whole community. Then, craft and document a set of Guiding Principles. Depending on the size of your community, this may be a good time for forming pairs or small teams to draft the document, and then post it for a broader conversation among all community members. As with other elements of your knowledge system, these Guiding Principles may go through a number of iterations before they represent the views of the whole community. It is very important to take the time to go through several iterations in order to creating principles that everyone understands and supports. Tools and Resources Guiding Principles | |
