 | | Significant changes in people, organizations, communities and societies occur through an ongoing process of introducing new ideas that then become stabilized into everyday practice. Newness or diversity always challenges the status quo. Old ways need to be disturbed before newness can enter. Thus, fostering change always requires creating disturbances. The challenge is in introducing differences that can really make a difference, rather than simply tweaking the way things are. This challenge will require your community to create a unique system of knowledge that is designed to meet the challenges you have recognized in your domain or field of inquiry. The process begins with surfacing and integrating your new ideas and concepts in order to reveal their patterns and interrelationships. These ideas may take the form of different beliefs and assumptions, new mental models, results of research studies, or simply your community members varying opinions or views about your field of inquiry. Reflections 1. What are the key concepts that you are bringing forward from your work in Discover Space? Which of these challenge the status quo? Which of these challenge your beliefs and mental models? 2. What other concepts have surfaced as youve worked together as a community? 3. Among all the key concepts surfaced by your community, which have the most potential for breakthrough ideas and concepts? 4. What methods or tools will you choose for integrating your most novel ideas into new mental models and patterns? Actions Using the questions for reflection above, gather and document all of the key concepts your community has surfaced. Then, through individual reflection and community conversation, focus your attention on those ideas and concepts that hold the most potential for shaking up your thinking and revealing new ideas. Then, review the Tools and Resources offered here for integrating novel ideas. Choose at least one of the tools available or others that your community members may be familiar with and use it to integrate your ideas. Depending on the size of your community, you may want to organize smaller groups to work with your ideas using different tools, and then bring the results together for further synthesis and integration. Your results from integrating these new ideas will be most useful if they represent a collective understanding of your ideas, the patterns they reveal, and the nature of the relationships among the patterns.
